MESENS E. L. T. / CLOSSON Hermann / BRETON André. MULTIPLE-CIRCULATION POSTCARD, 1928. Postcard sent by E. L. T. Mesens to Hermann Closson on June 27, 1928, re-addressed by Closson to André Breton on September 21, 1928, then returned by Breton to Closson on October 12, 1928. Address crossed out and re-addressed; handwritten notes and Belgian and French postmarks. Text by Mesens: “The idiot. We thought there were only a few morons like André Breton and Camille Goemans who would…… E. L. T. Mesens.” Closson adds: “Just look, my dear Breton, at what your paupers are doing with the weaknesses you have for them.” Finally, Breton: “I don’t understand, dear friend. I have always considered Mr. Mesens to be scum, which gives you a measure of my charity toward him. A.B.” Document relating to the conflictual relations between the Belgian and Parisian Surrealists following the rift caused by the Chirico exhibition in March 1928.
