[SCUOLA MAZZON] CESANA Fiorella. LA GIRAFFA, 1953. - Lot 374
[SCUOLA MAZZON] CESANA Fiorella. LA GIRAFFA, 1953. Oil on isorel. Monogrammed SC lower right. 700 x 495 mm A founding member of the MAC group (Mouvement pour un Art Concret) in 1948, Galliano Mazzon, art teacher at Milan's Alfredo Panzini College, began presenting his students' work to the public in 1950. A first exhibition was held at Milan's Galerie Bompiani in December 1950. Numerous others followed, notably outside Italy: twice at La Hune in 1953 and 1955, and at the Moma in New York in 1955. The pupils of Mazzon, a drawing teacher at Milan's Lyceum Panzani, shared a common style: Gabriella Granata (aged fourteen) painted her awakening cat, just as Fiorella Cesana (aged thirteen) painted her own portrait: "Moi, quand je suis fâchée" ("Me, when I'm angry"): clean flat tints, bands of gold and silver, the right use of harsh colors. This childlike art without tenderness - only a giraffe is graceful - is what appeals to grown-ups (1)." Des dessins d'enfants aux Tarots de Saint-Germain des Prés, Le Monde, October 23, 1953. Exhibitions : - La Scuola Mazzon de Milan, La Hune, Paris, 1953. - Paintings by Italian children, Moma, New-York, 1955, no. 26, label on back.
