MITORAJ Igor Head, 1975 - Lot 307
MITORAJ Igor Head, 1975 Bronze with gold patina, signed and justified I/VIII. 70 x 65 x 50 mm Edition: 8 copies. Sand-cast by Boivain, Paris, by the artist. "I started with very small, very tactile things, tiny packaged bronzes." (Igor Mitoraj, Le Temps, November 11, 1999). This work, emblematic of the artist's early creations, was presented at La Hune from May 12 to June 8, 1976, during the exhibition that revealed Mitoraj's work to the public. A catalog was published, and the exhibition met with immediate critical and commercial success. "Today, the fundamental articulation of his language is based on the use of drapery. Spheres, squares, steles swaddled in gauze, torsos torsos, faces embalmed in a tightly woven ribbon of canvas - the extra epidermis establishes a border state where death is both present and warded off." Marie-Claude Volfin, Preface to the Mitoraj catalog, La Hune, 1976. Bibliography: Igor Mitoraj - Sculptures, La Hune, 1976, n°13.
