[BRETON André, HEISLER Jindrich and GHEERBRANT Bernard]. Pho - Lot 61
[BRETON André, HEISLER Jindrich and GHEERBRANT Bernard]. Photograph in front of a La Hune showcase dedicated to Marcel Duchamp, 1947. Vintage silver print, 129 x 178 mm, annotations on verso in graphite. A similar photograph, reproducing only the showcase, is attributed to Yves Hervochon by the Duchamp Research Center of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. "In the summer of 1947, Breton contacted the young bookseller and asked him to decorate the windows of La Hune as a tribute to Duchamp, in parallel with the Exposition internationale du surréalisme [...] that Breton and Duchamp were putting together. For the occasion, Breton and Roché, and probably Duchamp as well, lent documents, photographs and works of art. With the help of Czech surrealist poet and artist Jindrich Heisler (1914-1953), who had left Prague and settled in Paris in March 1947, Gheerbrant created a tribute to Duchamp, which was inaugurated in July in the bookshop windows on Rue Casimir-Delavigne." Paul B. Franklin, The artist and his critic stripped bare: the correspondence of Marcel Duchamp and Robert Lebel (Los Angeles: Getty Research Institute, 2016), pp. 303-304.
