ARTAUD Antonin. HÉLIOGABALE OU L'ANARCHISTE COURONNÉ. Paris, - Lot 37
ARTAUD Antonin. HÉLIOGABALE OU L'ANARCHISTE COURONNÉ. Paris, Denoël et Steele, 1934: in-8 (192 x 140 mm) of 191-[3] pp. First edition illustrated with six vignettes by André Derain. Press copy enriched with a signed autograph dispatch: "à René Daumal, parce qu'il aime tout ce que j'aime. Antonin Artaud." Artaud and Daumal, who from the late '20s shared a keen interest in Eastern metaphysics and the books of René Guénon, were introduced to each other in 1930 by Jean Paulhan, the latter wishing to help form a group of dissidents from Surrealism. We know from a draft letter from Artaud to Daumal, dated July 31, 1931, that the two men were considering the joint drafting of a manifesto on theater: "You agree with me in thinking that this sort of manifesto declaration that we must draw up together to make explicit the aims of the theater I want to make must revolve around absolutely concrete objects." Books dedicated to René Daumal are extremely rare, his library having disappeared.
