SARTRE Jean-Paul. POINTS DE VUE SUR MIRACLE À MILAN. - Lot 145
SARTRE Jean-Paul. POINTS DE VUE SUR MIRACLE À MILAN. Autograph manuscript of 31 ff. in-4 (270 x 210 mm) in ink on graph paper, recto. Working manuscript and first version, with numerous variants, of the review of Vittorio de Sica's film Miracle à Milan (Palme d'or 1951) published in n°75 des Temps modernes (January 1952) under the byline of Michelle Léglise-Vian. In this text, written in the feminine first person, Sartre offers an existentialist and Marxist critique of the film, opposing the interpretation put forward by a "young fascist friend" of the narrator, who in the printed version became "mon jeune ami de Passy" (my young friend from Passy). In his article Sartre travesti (in: Études sartriennes, no. 19, 2015) devoted to this criticism, Michel Comtat speculates that the reason Sartre "offered" this text to his companion Michèle Vian lay in the contract that bound him to Pathé, the film's distributor, to write screenplays. In 1962, Vittorio de Sica adapted Les Séquestrés d'Altona, published in 1959, for the screen.
